Rashi ( Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki: 1040 - 1105 )
Hebrew initials R.S.Y, considered to be the greatest TORAH commentator of
all times in both the old testament as well as the Talmud. Rashis commentary
is considered to be simple and yet influenced by holy insight. Rashi, who was
born in France, was extremely troubled that sacred writtings were being
destroyed due to anti-Semitic authorities, that he invented his own personal
script for writting hebrew text. This way the authorities could not identify
his work as TORAH material and therefore his writtings were saved. Rashis
script was adopted by many other traditional commentators to such an extend
that even TORAH material published today is many times printed in "Rashi" font,
to give the book a warm traditional and authentic "feel".
Rashis script as well as the commentary itself is studied in elementary
schools mainly in the religious-orthodox community. Orthodox boys can usually
read fluent Rashi by the age of 10, while fully perceiving the inner context
can many times be difficult even for adults and knowledged Torah schollars.
This is due to the fact that allthough Rashi "tried his best" to keep things
simple, he was still influeced by holy insight as mentioned before. Many
times inside a "simple" short sentence hides an extremely deep idea that is
very hard to understand. Because of this there are several traditional
commentators who try to aid with their own commentary on Rashi.
