Ramla Tourism Site

There are many important sites in Ramla, some of which have great historical value. Here is a summary of the city's historical sites and their opening hours

The White Tower

The white tower had been the city's center in its glory days, and in the 10th century it was said that "None is more beautiful than the White Tower in all of the Islamic world". Today, in fact, there aren't any visible remains of the original structure, built in the 8th century. The current remains are from the end of the 12th century, when the structure had been renovated at the order of the Sultan Salah el Dean. The complex's courtyard holds three subterranean water pools. On the north side of the complex there is a tower, standing 30 meters high, probably used as an observation post, due to the extensive view seen from its' top. Some researchers believe that the Muezzin made the Muslim call for prayer from the tower

The Pool of the Arches

The rare subterranean water pool, built in 789 AD, during the rule of the famous last Halif of El Rashid. The pool probably fed of a small spring in its depths, rainwater and an aqueduct providing it with water from the direction of the white tower. The Christians call it "Saint Helen's Pool', based on a tradition claiming that Helena, mother of the Roman emperor Constantine I is the one who initiated its excavation. Earlier the pool was known as 'The pool of El Anzia" (the pool of the goats), and it used to hold water troughs for the watering of cattle. The pool, with an area of 400 sq. m, is the only remaining intact structure in Israel from the days of the Abasi Halifs (750-940 AD). The pool's ceiling is supported by gigantic stone pillars with arches between them, typical to the style of the era when they were built. The arches from the time of the crusades which copied the Abassi arch were perhaps the model from which the gothic architecture was born centuries later.

The Great Masque -Jama el Amri

The Great Masque was originally built as a magnificent crusaders' chapel, founded in the first half on the 12th century. In the end of the 13th century, after the Mamlochs conquered Ramla from the hands of the Christians, the place was converted into a Masque. However, only few changes were made, except breaking the entrance door in the north wall and the inclusion of the Mahrab (an alcove in the wall to which the praying turn). The Masque is located in the old town and is easily recognizable thanks to the round tower that stands out from afar. It is the biggest and most preserved structure of a crusader's chapel in Israel

The Franciscan Hospice of St. Nicodemus and St. Joseph of Arimathea and the Franciscan  Church

In the 15th century a hostel was built for catholic pilgrims from Europe, by monks belonging to a Franciscan order. From the 16th century and onwards the place has been considered the home of Josef of Arimathea mentioned in the New Testament, who had been one of Jesus disciples and the one who approached Pontius Pilate and asked for his permission to take the body of Jesus down from the cross and bury it before Shabbat begins. Following the discovery that this was the location of Joseph's house, the site was pronounced sacred to catholic Christians and a monastery was built adjacent to the church. At the end of the 19th century a new church was founded in it, with beautiful paintings, sculptures and stained glass windows, among them also an original painting of The Descent from the Cross" by the Italian renaissance painter Titian, donated by the city of Madrid in the year 1846. In the end of the 19th century the "Terra Santa" school was opened in the site, where Muslim and Christian children study together. On the second floor of the church one can see the room of Napoleon Bonaparte, emperor of France

IZL Monument

When the Liberation war broke out the IZL fought and attacked, at the request of the Hagana (Jewish underground in British mandatory Palestine) headquarters, in order to break through the road to besieged Jerusalem. The IZL forces attacked Ramla several times, and among the operations were the explosion of the Lod railway station, retaliation acts and attacks of central transportation axis. During the battles at the Ramla front, 51 of IZLs fighters fell in battle. Some of them were declared as missing persons in the heat of battle, and only four years later an operation to locate the bodies and bring them to proper burial. The IZL monument, located to the north of Ramla can be found when driving from Tel Aviv beyond the railway tracks, at the sector where the battles occurred. It was built in memory of those heroes who fell in the battles of Ramla in the year 1948, their families and friends. The monument was designed by the architects Oscar and Avi Fisher, and was inaugurated on the holiday of Lag Ba'omer, on the 21st of May, 1992.
